(WHEC-TV) The U.S. Homeland Security Department wants people traveling from Canada into the U.S. to start paying a fee.
New York officials are speaking out against the proposal because they worry it could mean less money for the state’s economy. Currently, we pay a fee to go to Canada and that money is split between the U.S. and Canada.
Lawmakers in western New York are worried if a new fee is imposed the opposite way It could mean fewer tourists from Canada coming to our area and spending money.
Homeland Security says the fee would go toward increasing costs for border protection.
