Word For The Weekend

UKULELE

[yoo-kuh-ley-lee]

DEF: A small, guitarlike musical instrument, strung typically with 4 strings. It originated in the 1880s as a Hawaiian adaptation of the Portuguese machete, which is a small guitar-like instrument, which was introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants. Fun Fact: it’s a member of the lute family of instruments. Ukuleles commonly come in four sizes: soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone. (And I thought a uke is a uke is a uke!)

Check-out America’s Got Talent’s 12 year old Grace VanderWaal; she writes & sings her own songs, AND she plays ukulele.
